Killer Final

My final isn't a story or a complete work. It's a compilation of things i've been working on for two docs and a narrative.

the first end credits for my doc were done in AE by motion tracking-almost all done frame by frame-the bike light under the girl. i targeted the titles to follow the nulls, one for each title so that they follow the motion of the bike-in-the-camera.

the following two animations were a couple of the animation i made for my doc. the first liberally uses puppet tools along with basic transforms for the blood cells. the background is liquified and a solid is behind it so that the moving borders won't show black behind them.

the titles for my friend chelsea's doc "feMCee" i did by key lighting out the backgrounds used for the artist to draw the titles. the lighting wasn't consistent and the background was a different color than the glove the artist was wearing and his skin tone. i used on average three key lights and two color keys to get everything out. i also did lyrics for her doc that took multiple color keys.

the last is part of the climax scene from logan and my narrative "berenice". the green screen has been extremely difficult to work with because it was shot on the studio cameras, which are DV. the key lights were tweaked for two weeks and look presentable with the help of a simple choker and color correction. there are also multiple nulls on most of the shots because i didn't think to use tracking points and so have to find/invent them throughout the shots so that i can use motion tracking to make sure the window looks like it belongs in the scene.

fine-ish cut for doc class to comment on from Jordan Torres on Vimeo.

hi! a fine-ish cut of my doc. there is simple after effects work in it but if i could get the damn tilt shifting to work, it would be more advanced (or look more advanced ;D ) it's all effects, transforms, and mask work. the narrative work i'll be posting is a lot harder. above are some images i used

:*

oh! and the animation at the end is just a placeholder, it isn't mine. sketches of people will be going there

music by arcade fire also isn't mine and is a placeholder as well

Particles

Lady Blows Away from Jordan Torres on Vimeo.

i wasn't really getting particles. at first i had pink blood cells shooting out of the dolls' eyes and into her mouth but that made no sense at all. ben helped me use cc particle system to follow a mask down her image.-moving the anchor point of the particles to follow the mask makes the particles seem to be her body blowing away.

green screen

green screen from Jordan Torres on Vimeo.

since marcy and i are killing each other ninja style, i thought a lovely video in the background of cherry blossom trees would be apropos. while i love the keylight, i don't think (again) that i spent enough time on this project trying to figure out how to fix the green spill-on-skin problem. it was a little challenging getting the green out of marcy's hair and away from the weapons.

motion tracking

note: this isn't from vimeo. the bastards accused me of using all my weekly allowance of memory.

hi. this is my motion tracking assignment. i shot the footage last spring and thought (i.e. russ suggested) that it would be cool if a reflection of somebody who isn't actually there walked by in the background. The third key in from the center is the key i tracked because it stays in the same area most of the time. the reflection is the guy in our class who walked by the green screen with his hood pulled up (i don't remember who that was, ack). i keyed out the background and with oodles of ben's help, got him to walk through by first pre-composing him and with the use of a mask so that he comes through the right area. He follows the null that is attached to the track point. his image is distorted so that he looks like he's walking past the back of the man playing the piano with a corner pin effect.

AE Text

Untitled from Jordan Torres on Vimeo.

great. so. this is playing around with text. it's a bunch of opacity animators timed separately. the coolest effect happens when you do one letter at a time like i did with my name, but i didn't have enough time to do it. i'd like to keep expanding on this one. i think the concept is cool, but the project kind of hastily done.

Project 4

Inside the Womb from Jordan Torres on Vimeo.

This is the inside of a womb with white blood cells, red blood cells ready for an x-ray and a virus in the background. The uterus was created by taking a jpeg into photoshop and turning it into a 3D primitive. I exported it into after effects and used psds of the cells that i had masked in photoshop. they are positioned using the x,y, and z coordinates and have scale , position and orientation keyframes on them. the camera navigates forward with no real direction. when it flips, imagine a baby getting ready to liberate itself.

ben sat with me almost the entire time i did this. it was really confusing getting from photoshop 3D to after effects.

AE Projproj 3

This is...my dog from Jordan Torres on Vimeo.

I hope this lame intro misleads you. the rest of it makes me laugh every time i watch it. i followed a tutorial online to create the text... it does have a mask to create the vignette look and a couple of sweet eases. and who could hate the lens flare?

the rest is my dog. there are two masks to create the three lovelies on the couch. i was hoping someone (ben or anyone else) could help me figure out how to fix the left leg on the middle dog. i had to adjust the mask in order to fit in the nose of the far right dog but it made that leg look pretty bad.

AEProject 2

Lady with some Business Going On from Jordan Torres on Vimeo.

i'm not super proud of this project. it's weird looking. the things i did differently from the last one was puppet the waves on her hips (a bit hard to see) and the flames around her waist. the energy swirls around her have opacity changes. the chakras that move behind her are mattes. there's a picture of flames and sparks that i took awhile ago...there. not really knowing what mattes do, it took me stumbling along to figure out how to make them. the purple thing behind her head is a polystar shape with pucker and bloats added to it.

AEProject1

Untitled from Jordan Torres on Vimeo.

The pink things are cherry blossoms. I took the branches and flowers off the internet and cut them out as masks in photoshop. i got the branches into after effects, then completely erased my flowers composition. so, using the pen tool, i cut out each flower as a mask. the background is another layer that i applied filters to in photoshop in order to make it b&w, and messed with the levels.

note: i had windy sound, but it managed to slip away.

all of the flowers are parented to the branch. it moves with a rotation transform. i applied the wiggler to the flowers that stay on the branches so that they move with the branch. the rest of the flowers all have rotation and position transforms. some of the flowers' position keyframes are set to rove across time, and most of the them have ease in and outs on the keyframes where the position changes abruptly. it took a really long time to do each flower because after finishing each one, i watched how they all moved together in order to figure out where the next flower should go. some of the flowers i scaled so that they look either like they are coming at the screen or flying away from it.

Bays Assignment 1: Photoshop

Ta Da! This image is a bit random (possibly cheesy), but it's my first attempt at photoshop. It's composed of four pictures I've taken on film during traveling. The mountain background and elephant are both masks that i cut around using the polygonal lasso tool. The magnetic lasso tool turned out to be my nemesis.
The shadow under the little elephants' feet was created using the "multiply" option under the layers tab. Her legs were lengthened using the clone tool. The street running through the middle of the composition had to be manipulated using the transform tools scale, flip horizontally, rotate, skew, perspective, and free transform, and it also has a mask. Getting around the chairs and shadows from peoples feet took awhile, but two shape tool lines helped layout the perspective at which the road should lie in order to look like a sidewalk. The elephant and the street both have mask adjustments on them for feathered-ness (new word, pass it on), radius, contrast and smooth.
